Why Are Wisdom Tooth Extractions Necessary?

The truth is many important reasons why so many people have to have their wisdom teeth removed.

First, most of us have mouths that are too small for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are leftovers from our ancestors with larger mouths to accommodate more teeth for chewing and grinding up nuts and coarse vegetables. Many modern-day people don’t have room for their wisdom teeth.

Another reason many people have their wisdom teeth extracted is that they can be more prone to cavities and infection. This is doubly true if you have crowding issues with teeth rubbing together. This can cause bacteria and plaque to build up between teeth and gum pockets, which can cause infection in the wisdom teeth. This can make them much more difficult to extract, and the infection can spread to the rest of your mouth.

Lastly, wisdom teeth are notorious for erupting through the gum incorrectly. Some wisdom teeth only erupt part-way through the gum, causing what is known as an impacted wisdom tooth which ultimately will have to be surgically cut out from the gum. However, some wisdom teeth can come sideways at odd angles or remain completely lodged in the gum. When this happens, it may require extensive surgery to get the tooth out before it develops an infection or starts to cause problems.
