Dental Sealants

DENTAL SEALANTS FROM YOUR DENTIST IN OSWEGO, IL & BLOOMINGDALE, IL

A preventive dentistry treatment that protects teeth from decay, dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars), forming a barrier against bacteria, plaque, and food particles.

The history of dental sealants

Sealants were first developed in the late 1800s, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that they began to be used routinely in dental practices. Today, sealants are used on the teeth of more than half of all U.S. children by the time they reach first grade, with their benefits being well-documented in numerous studies.

In fact, they are so effective that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recognized sealants as one of the most important public health tools available for preventing cavities in children.

Who can have sealants placed?

While these protective coatings are most used on children’s teeth, they can be applied on adult teeth, as well. In fact, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), sealants can be an effective decay-prevention measure for adults who have deep grooves or pits in their teeth that are difficult to clean.

Of course, it’s important to note that not everyone is a candidate for dental sealants. In order to be eligible, a tooth must:

  • Have a deep groove or pit

  • Not be experiencing current decay or have fillings in place

  • Not have previous sealants.

The best time to place dental sealants is before cavities develop. Once a tooth has developed decay, the damage cannot be reversed, and a filling or other more extensive treatment will be necessary. That’s why it’s important to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings, so that any decay can be detected and treated early.
